Episode 79: Small-ball must go!

What’s Going on Pistonscast Posse,
John W. Davis here. I for one, feel much much better. I’ve had alot on my Pistons mind and it was bound to get out sooner than later. It’s just so tough when you know your team can be the best in the league but they are obviously hindering themselves.
Its not because of injuries, or even the lack of a missing piece, its because we have too much of a good thing.
*How do you feeling about small ball part 2?
*Did John W. Davis go over board?
*Do you still trust Coach Curry’s judgement?
Where is your my mind at after listening to Episode 79? Get in where you fit in!
Peace,

Ryan January 16th at 8:31 pm
Small ball must go!
I agree with John!
Coach Curry needs to take charge and bench rip! I still trust him, but he needs to not be afraid of his own players and do what’s best for the team!

True Blue Pistons is really defending small ball:

http://truebluepistons.blogspot.com/2009/01/pistons-fans-come-down-from-that-ledge.html
It makes sense in the sense that this lineup features the Pistons’ best players, but I don’t think it should be the one they start.
Let’s put it honestly: Detroit is starting two SGs. Um, that’s not good.
Last I checked Rip and Tay aren’t a SF and PF respectively. When the Pistons play Boston and Cleveland that lineup won’t work. So just bring someone off the bench.
Check out the bench points from recent games: 19 (Pacers), 6 (Bobcats), 17 (Blazers)
Putting AI w/ the second unit just makes sense. If the Pistons lose tonight, something HAS to change.
Steve January 16th at 8:59 pm
Oh, another thing: The Pistonhttp://www.pistonscast.com/blog/2009/01/16/episode-79-small-ball-must-go/comment-page-1/#comment-1279s rank 26th in the NBA in PPG.
How is that even possible? With all that firepower they should be scoring at least a 100 every game.
And check out the teams they’re above: Memphis, LA Clippers, and Charlotte.
Oh, and those teams all suck….alot.
Ryan January 16th at 9:40 pm
So I just got done watching the first quarter against the Thunder.
I’m surprised we’re only down three.
If this were any other team, we’d be down at least 10, maybe 15-20.
Because:
A.) We can’t rebound with three guards on the floor. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD CURRY.
B.) Defense is lacking with THREE GUARDS ON THE FLOOR. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD CURRY.
Watching Rip try to guard Durant was like Earl Boykins trying to guard Shaq.
It just doesn’t work, and he just can’t guard him. That’s who Tayshaun would normally be guarding.
C.) You sub out… but only for PF’s? Really? Keep all three guards in so our defense and rebounding is still lacking?
I honestly don’t have faith that the Pistons can win against the worst team in the league right now…
Heck, they had to rely on a last second shot by AI to win last time.
Maybe a loss will open Curry’s blinded eyes.
Ryan January 16th at 10:58 pm
And so as I’m still watching this horrific game, the three guard lineup goes on for THE WHOLE GAME.
Curry doesn’t stick to what he said about the bulk of the time going to the traditional lineup.
We’re getting our butts kicked because we have three guards and two power forwards on the floor — at times, three guards, a small forward, and a power forward.
Herrmann should’ve been subbed in when Tayshaun needed some treatment.
And Jason Maxiell, yet again, hasn’t played.
That’s cool, I guess one of the best rebounders/shot blockers on the team doesn’t need to play when we need those attributes the most.
Free Amir? Pshh. Free Jason.
Steve January 16th at 11:31 pm
Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
Well, at least this means change is coming. You can’t lose three in a row (Charlotte, Indy, Thunder) to teams w/ a combined record of 38-82 and now have changes.
I don’t know what it will be….lineup changes, Curry getting fired, a trade, or what….but I guarantee that something will change.
Steve January 16th at 11:34 pm
Oh, some quick stats/thoughts:
Out rebounded 35-52.
DNP Maxiell….why?
Just 8 FTA’s
Stuckey 1-10
Durant 14-21…defense anyone?
Ryan January 16th at 11:34 pm
Outrebounded 52-35.
Ryan January 16th at 11:34 pm
Heh, posted at the same time.
Ryan January 16th at 11:36 pm
Yeah Steve, letting Durant get all those points was most likely from us having a three guard lineup throughout the entire game.
We had Rip and Afflalo guarding him — that’s not good enough.
Jason Maxiell might as well go and sleep on the bus during games.
Steve January 16th at 11:54 pm
For real Ryan.
The Pistons are just 1 game up on Miami. MIAMI!
And they let OKC get 10 more rebounds than their average while Detroit got 6 less than normal.
John January 17th at 9:26 am
Jan 21st! Thats all I’m saying!
Richard January 17th at 3:29 pm
i’m not watching the game if he starts the small ball lineup
ice_for_dyess January 17th at 3:32 pm
Hey Richard don’t turn the tv to the Pistons game then because he’s gonna play the small ball again.
PistonsNation.com January 17th at 3:39 pm
If you’ve followed Keith Langlois’ writing you’ll notice he’ll take the company line 11 out of 10 ten times. I don’t think he’s allowed to have his own opinion.
PS- I’m feeling those Pistons cartoons, and would love to collaborate with the artist.
Deven aka (Pimp Scwalla) January 17th at 6:31 pm
I agree with Ryan. Every area we got junk handed to us, that damn small-ball lineup allowed it.
It looks like MC has become too concerned with manipulating the lineup instead of Coaching the players.
I think his inconsistencies show that he doesn’t trust his players or his own judgement at times.
John January 17th at 7:33 pm
NEWS ALERT JASON MAXIELL HAS BEEN TRADED. He was traded from the Pistons Playing Rotation to the Pistons DNP-CD team!
Stay tuned to Pistonscast for much more on this breaking news!

More breaking news: Michael Curry is an IDIOT!

John January 17th at 7:48 pm
Jan 21st is only two games away…
Deven aka (Pimp Scwalla) January 17th at 10:38 pm
I’m witcha Dizzle! The 21st!
Dre January 17th at 10:40 pm
It’s funny that we hired Mike as headcoach because it was assumed that the players would relate and listen to him more because he was a player in league. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have gotten rid of Flip, eventhough I like him, atleast he knew what he was doing in the coaching aspect. Yes Mike is dealing with more injury problems and an early season trade, but I’m sure Flip or Larry Brown, who I also liked, would fare better than Mike Curry. He needs to go coach in the D-League. Or get a few more years in as an assistant.
Dre January 17th at 10:42 pm
I like Mike Curry too… as an assistant.
John January 17th at 10:51 pm
1 more game until the 21st!
Ryan January 17th at 10:51 pm
The game is lost. We played small ball. Curry should be tossed. I’ll trip him and he’ll fall.
A short poem written by me just now in 5 seconds.
Ryan January 17th at 11:52 pm
Any of you who use Facebook, I made a piece of Flair called “Small Ball.”
It’s pending, but should be available for you to add if you want soon (probably tomorrow).
It says “Michael Curry, Small Ball is BAD!!!” on it.
You can search Small Ball, Michael Curry, Pistons, and Detroit Pistons.
John January 18th at 12:58 am
HAHA RYAN Your POEM WAS GREAT “The game is lost. We played small ball. Curry should be tossed. I’ll trip him and he’ll fall.”
