Coach Curry to Start McDyess!!!!

Michael Curry Detroit Pistons

Pistons coach Michael Curry has moved veteran forward Antonio McDyess into the team’s starting lineup for the final stretch of the season.

I just think it makes us more stable starting games off,” Curry said. “It makes us more solid defensively, especially when we have to help.”

McDyess will replace Amir Johnson, who has struggled as of late.

“Our hope is that Amir will play better against the second-line guys,” Curry said.

What do you think about this move?

it’s a good decision but i still don’t think it will be enough especially because this means a weaker second unit

John February 17th at 2:51 pm

If he only plays his normal 30 mins I dont think it will make a difference! However, maybe Dice helps us get out to consistently good starts! So you know what, Doing something is better than nothing! Maybe Amir does go out there and kill second teams will all of his 1st team Starting experience.

TADOne February 17th at 3:01 pm

Knee-jerk.

John February 17th at 3:51 pm

REACTION!

Steve February 17th at 4:08 pm

Despite this being the 125th lineup change this season, I actually like this one.

Why start Amir if he’s just going to play the first 5 minutes, especially when he picks up 2-3 quick fouls?

So this move makes sense, but the bench is pretty weak now. It’s pretty much Rip and that’s about the only consistent guy.

Amir is just not ready (will he ever be?) to start against top-tier NBA PFs. He’s done good in the past against other bench guys, so you might as well get back to that.

Ryan February 17th at 4:09 pm

Another lineup change — I think McDyess is great off the bench, and that’s where he’s more comfortable. He claims that he gets a better feel for the tempo of the game, etc. when coming off the bench.

I feel that you can’t always start your best 5 guys. If you do, you often get a lackluster performance from your second unit, having no one to go to, inexperience, etc. The starters should have some guys who would normally come off the bench, and the second unit should have guys who could be starting.

I like Amir or Kwame in the starting lineup, but I suppose it’ll work out with ‘Dyess. We’ll just need more from Amir and more Baby Eatin’ off the bench.

John February 17th at 5:16 pm

Amir is only 21 give him a break STEVE! Alot of guys are not good at that age in the NBA!

John February 17th at 5:17 pm

Ryan dont believe the hype. McDyess only say that I like coming of the bench stuff to be a team player.

I still would like him off the bench but making this switch is better than doing nothing at all. I dont think he will play any extra minutes.

Steve February 17th at 5:31 pm

haha, my bad John!

But that is true, he’s still the youngest on the team even though he’s been here for four years.

I’m not saying Amir can’t be a great role player, but I’m just not so sure he is starter material. At least not for now anyways.

John February 17th at 6:31 pm

Amir needs experience but he also needs knowledge. I will say that Deven was right. Amir should do well watching the game and being told what to exploit and then coming of the bench and doing it. We will see tonight!

Ryan February 17th at 7:55 pm

If Amir plays.

Steve February 17th at 8:05 pm

hey guys, this is from ESPN’s Hollinger Insider Gems:

” Speaking of Detroit, I heartily applaud the decision to put Antonio McDyess in the starting lineup ahead of Amir Johnson. With a 15.32 player efficiency rating, 50.5 percent shooting and solid defense, McDyess has been the best Pistons frontcourt player after Rasheed Wallace. Johnson, meanwhile, has struggled with fouls the entire season and has been surprisingly invisible on offense. And Kwame Brown … seriously, don’t get me started.

Now if the Pistons would just let Jason Maxiell onto the court once in a while, they’d have all their rotation problems solved. Mad Max’s 16.05 PER is nearly the same as last season’s, but despite the struggles of Johnson and Brown and the fact that McDyess was gone for over a month, he’s averaging only 16 minutes a game. He hasn’t played more than 20 minutes since Jan. 21 and received single-figure minutes in four of Detroit’s eight games leading into the break.

As much heat as Michael Curry has taken this season for his approach, personnel selection has been just as big of an issue. It shouldn’t take a guy two-thirds of the season to figure out who his best players are.”

Summary: More Dyess, way more Maxiell, less Kwame, less Amir.

John February 17th at 8:38 pm

Right if Amir plays. Isnt that the truth. DNP-City.

John February 17th at 8:42 pm

Summary: More Dyess, Analysis: Can he seriously play over 30 mins for the rest of the season and the playoffs? He is getting his minutes regardless if he was coming off the bench.

Summary: way more Maxiell, Analysis: Sure why not. He is a game changer.

Summary: less Kwame, Analysis: He doesnt play anyway. Who cares?

Summary: less Amir. Analysis: You know I love my Amir. I want the same amount 15 mins with less fouls!

John February 17th at 11:12 pm

Starting Dice was successful. 24 pts 14 rebounds. He play too many mins tho. 41 mins. He cant do that every game. He also cant make the rest of the guys play defense. This is sad.

Steve February 17th at 11:26 pm

Oh Michael Curry…

Well more Dyess worked well, but yeah he did play way too many minutes.

Less Kwame was good.

Less Amir was ok…2 pts, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks in 14 mins.

More Max? Just 1 rebound in 7 mins.

John February 18th at 2:18 am

Its not as simple as Hollinger put it Steve. We need a rotation. We need tactical coaching and tactical substitutions. All we get is keep Dice and Sheed in because they are experienced veterans. This is horrible. I just dont honestly believe Coach Curry is this inept. Something else must be up. We must be trading Maxiell or Amir this week.

TADOne February 18th at 10:51 am

Trading Maxiell or Amir? For whom? If you believe the reports, Amare is off the market. Besides, i’m not sure they would even want Amir in a trade. I sure wouldn’t. I know Amir is young, but exactly how long are we going to stick with that excuse?? We used to say the same things about Darko, and we all know how that turned out.

David C February 18th at 11:00 am

After getting beat by the Bucks, (THE BUCKS? Really?) I almost think that this season is a lost cause. I think they should keep playing Amir so he can develop. May as well develop more young guys, and see if some of the vets (Sheed, AI, Rip) can be moved by the deadline. Do the Pistons, currently comprised, make the playoffs? Probably. Do they do anything worth noting? Probably not.

John February 18th at 1:01 pm

@TAD Dude Amare is on the market. Hell Shaq is too. Robert Sarver the Suns owner doesnt like to lose money. They know they arent winning a Championship so they are willing to make a monetary deal.

It took Jermaine O’neal 6 years to be good. Amir is ahead of that curve!

John February 18th at 1:03 pm

@David C. Whats up man! The Bucks game hurt. Two times in 2 weeks is hard to swallow. The Bucks dont have Mike Redd, Bogut or Ridnour and they still take it to the hoop at will. This is ridiculous!

I think we make the Playoffs but you are right ITS TIME TO DEVELOP THE BENCH BABIES!

TADOne February 18th at 4:01 pm

WHOA! John, are you seriously comparing young Amit to Jermaine O’Neal? I love you man, but you may need to scale back the liquid lunches.

As for Amare: yeah, i’m sure Sarver will be making a deal for Stoudemire…after the season. Since Gentry is now the coach, I think he waits until the offseason to move him.

TADOne February 18th at 4:02 pm

*Amir I meant…

Richard February 18th at 4:14 pm

it’s been a quiet trade deadline

John February 18th at 5:00 pm

Thurs will bevery LOUD! Trust me, I hear people yelling already. SCREAMING FOR PISTONS JOY!

TADOne February 18th at 5:40 pm

John: I’m guessing you mean the Pistons/Spurs game Thrusday. I just don’t see any big trades happening. Too many rumors abound for many to be true.

Steve February 18th at 5:55 pm

Brad Miller to the Bulls?

Richard February 18th at 7:18 pm

i agree with tadone, i don’t think anything will happen except for a possible small trade but nothing major (i can only hope tho)

John February 18th at 7:27 pm

Brad Miller and Salmons to the Bulls!!!!

John February 18th at 7:28 pm

@TADOne Have you honestly heard a real Detroit rumor. All i hear is Chicago Toronto and both teams have made a trade now. Its Detroit left for the Big Man! Im telling you son!!!

Steve February 18th at 7:53 pm

Well one good thing is that with all these other trades, Detroit is now the clear-cut leader in cap space this summer by far.

Hopefully Dumars has a great plan for all that money.

Steve February 18th at 7:54 pm

I hope so John!

But I honestly can’t imagine who Detroit would trade and for who.

Mike Watson February 18th at 8:09 pm

Joe D. always has a plan he’s like a superhuman genius and we’re mere mortals. Joe D. is the man he’ll lead us back down the right path.

TADOne February 18th at 9:07 pm

Ok John, i’ll bite. Yes, if the Suns are still interested in trading Amare before Thursday because they are losing money, then I will be on here tomorrow to praise your genious.

However…….

…if this doesn’t happen, let’s look at options for all of this money coming off the books:

Trades: Bosh(if he is truly fed up), Amare(we won’t have any trade options left), Brand(see both above).

Free Agents: Boozer(um, not a fan, but may not have another option), Millsap(restricted; have to see which way Utah goes), Artest(did hell freeze over?), Marvin Williams(either him or Tay have to move to PF so no), David Lee(would love to have him, but he is restricted and the Knicks won’t let him leave), Lamar Odom(only if he is cheap).

Anyway, there are names i’m purposely leaving out because they don’t matter. Discuss….

John February 18th at 10:35 pm

The cap room is key. I dont want Boozer he is so injury prone its not even funny. I would go for Artest, David Lee, or Odom. I really like Odom. He’s talented and finally started to figure out he can dominate on the boards as evidenced by his recent play after Bynum has went down.

Steve February 18th at 10:55 pm

TADOne,

I think David Lee could be a real option. NY is so focused on 2010 that they won’t/can’t afford to pay him $10+ million a year for 4-5 years or so.

Odom….that’s interesting. Never really thought about him before. I think that depends on how Bynum is when he comes back.

And I think a run can be made for Bosh over the summer or beginning of next season, hopefully.

TADOne February 19th at 11:10 am

Yeah John, Boozer is something I don’t even want to consider. I mean, when healthy, he can be a consistent 20/10 every single night. However, I just don’t trust his injury history nor his character.

Steve: I love David Lee. I hope his sudden nightly double/double’s aren’t a direct result of playing under Mike D’Antoni and more of a reflection of a player just finally getting playing time. Thing is, I wouldn’t want to pay Lee $10+ mil a year either.

As for Odom: he can be good, REALLY good, when motivated. However, I don’t want another Sheed who plays good when the moment hits him.

Mike Watson February 19th at 1:11 pm

Ok Tyson Chandler is out there now. He’s a great defensive presence why not try to pick him up and then try to get another free agent big man in 2010? Dont know if it’s possible or why it wouldn’t work. Let me know.

TADOne February 19th at 1:35 pm

Well, because Tyson just failed a physical because of an old toe injury. I don’t want a player who will be injury prone.

John February 19th at 1:58 pm

Tyson is an underachiever. He just doesn’t want it. He is so tall but hardly blocks shots. He should get 13-14 every game. He should dominate. But he doesnt. NEXT PLAYER!!!!!

Ryan February 19th at 5:04 pm

Maybe if Iverson would’ve played with a fro like this, he would’ve had the defensive intensity of Ben Wallace the Piston!

TADOne February 19th at 5:47 pm

Hi John. It’s 4:47 pm on Thursday.

Steve February 19th at 6:30 pm

Yeah, the Pistons didn’t make any moves. Can’t say I blame them.

Luckily they will be way under the cap this summer so not only can they sign free agents but can absorb other players’ contract. Remember what happened when Denver gave away Camby to LAC.

John February 19th at 7:28 pm

Thanks TAD!!!! (NOT) Anyway, I will admit I was wrong. I really thought they would make the most of everyone else’s paranoia about the economy.

Richard February 19th at 7:31 pm

screw you joe dumars… to me the offseason already started

Mike Watson February 20th at 1:43 pm

Yeah john i had your back but ummmm this one aint lookin to good

John February 20th at 4:18 pm

I know you did Mike W. I appreciate it. Its not my fault tho. I mean come on how easy would it have been to make a trade. Anyway Amare is out for the rest of the regular season now with a severe eye injury. So who knows man….

Mike Watson February 20th at 10:52 pm
