Terrence Williams: The Piston’s Sensible Pick

Terrence Williams

By Deven Khrucell (aka Pimp Scwalla)

When the Detroit Pistons go on the clock June 25th, it’ll be anybody’s guess who Joe Dumars might draft at number 15 and even more of a mystery is what position. One thing’s for sure, with the current state of the Detroit Pistons, he had better choose carefully.

The Piston’s main concern right now is trying to pick up impact players from the free agent market or by trading for them. Most of the big name free agents are big men like; Bosh, Okur, Boozer, etc… Players like those won’t come cheap. In order to make this possible, there’s a good chance they will lose Rip Hamilton and/or Tayshaun Prince.

The draft pick that I see fitting best in this mix is Louisville Cardinal, Terrence Williams. Williams is a lock-down defender with plenty of explosiveness and is able to knock down three point shots when needed. I also like the fact that he is a four year guy who can guard both the two and the three.

While Williams won’t quickly replace Rip or Tay, drafting a guy like Williams could help soften the blow of losing one or two of Detroit’s cornerstone players. His versatility makes it easy to slide him into either the shooting guard or the small forward position. He also gives the Pistons some leverage when decide which players are going to be here in the future.

Many believe Rodney Stuckey is a better fit at shooting guard and the Piston’s should draft a point guard. That definitely makes sense, but let’s look at the whole picture. Drafting and working with another young point guard (at this point) will be too daunting and could be disastrous for an inexperienced Michael Curry. Besides that, we still don’t know for sure that Rodney’s late season woes were because of the position he plays or the fact that being a great NBA point guard can’t be achieved over night.

Either way we look at it, in order for Detroit to get better, it’s going to cost them at the shooting guard or small forward position–leaving a big hole in the line-up. Why not fill in that hole with someone that can play both - it just makes sense.

What do you think?

Finally Amir is gone

Dre June 24th at 12:00 am

Yeah. I bet John is heartbroken.

Steve June 24th at 12:59 am

I like Williams (BTW http://twitter.com/TheRealTWill), but I don’t think he falls to 15 for the Pistons.

Bucks Trade Oberto To Pistons For Amir Johnson

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/The_Baseline/entry/view/25879/bucks_trade_oberto_to_pistons_for_amir_johnson

And he is gone…. i hate this trade. We give up a young athletic player for an old one. I hope the buy out rumor is truth…

Astrid June 24th at 4:24 am

I wish Williams will fall to us, but I’m doubting it.

Astrid June 24th at 4:31 am

Also; So excited to see all these trades!

Rebuild rebuild~

Ali June 24th at 7:30 am

Joe’s big trade before the draft…getting Oberto?

Seriously? I thought he wanted to get better, not 10 years older. how the hell does this make the team better?

Not to mention now you don’t have any trade bait for Chris Bosh. Unless if Toronto specifically asked for Oberto, in which case it makes sense.

Ali June 24th at 7:32 am

Perhaps this trade means he plans on picking up BJ Mulliens? Or maybe he feels Dyess is going to walk so he needs a veteran big?

I’m stumped on this one. He must love picking up Pop’s trash (Nazr Mohammad anyone?)

Ali June 24th at 7:39 am

If Williams falls to 15, I’d say he’s likely a lock (but you never know with Joe). If not, it’ll likely come down between Daye, Mulliens, Blaire or Lawson.

On a side note, why not get Jodie Meeks with the first second rounder or buy his contract (like a Rudy Fernandez thing). This team needs 3 point shooting, and Meeks can certainly provide that. Even if he’s not as athletic as others guys, just placing him in the corner with afflalo on the other side, you’ve created a wide open lane for Bynumite. thoughts?

Astrid June 24th at 10:27 am

You think a little too much sometimes Ali. Oberto is likely to be waived.

Ali June 24th at 11:16 am

But you’re missing the point Astrid. the Pistons were getting a lot of offers for amir last year. They should have gotten much more than just cap space.

I mean Richard Jefferson was traded for cap space, we could have had a guy of his caliber for Amir, Fabio and Sharpe etc.

Ali June 24th at 11:39 am

Turns out there could be a reason for sending Amir. according to pistons.com, the move was done to entice Milwaukee’s GM to be willing to give up Villanueva.

I’ve got no complaints if we get villanueva, except that he isn’t a great rebounder and has no eyebrows.

Ali June 24th at 1:18 pm

Richard June 24th at 1:35 pm

I don’t want villanueva!!! is that really the best we can do with our cap

TADOne June 24th at 4:35 pm

Has anyone checked on John to make sure he hasn’t done anything drastic since his boy got traded??

Richard June 24th at 5:03 pm

he probably moved to milwaukee

Ali June 24th at 8:24 pm

Well Richard, realistically what do you want to do with the cap space this summer?

I’d rather not resort to Boozer. Even putting his injuries aside, the Jazz had the same winning percentage with him as they did without him. In other words, he’s another Iverson - a guy with talent that doesn’t make his team better.

And I wouldn’t take Tyson Chandler just yet, even if NO would have traded him for just Amir and cash (see why this trade looks idiotic now?). His injuries have turned out to be worse than expected and word is he won’t be healthy for a while.

I say by July 20th, you’ll know if the Pistons will be a playoff team next year. All the little screw ups have come to haunt the team at this point. Think about it, what would have happened if he had picked Josh Howard over Delfino, or Branden Bass/Ronny Turiaf over Maxiell, how about Deandre Jordon over Sharpe? And lets not forget about Mateen Cleeves, Rodney White and Darko. Guys like Maxiell are great to have as auxiliary players on a championship contender, but they don’t consistently contribute compared to people the Pistons have passed on.

Joe definitely understood that the Pistons were stale and had to be blown up, but he’s still got a lot of work to do. You trade Rip and Tay, that’s great, but you’ve still got holes across the roster. He will need to pull off a couple of great draft picks if he really wants a title.

Richard June 25th at 11:54 am

Well you look at every player and say that you don’t want to settle for them, I’m saying why pay him 6 mil and someone else 10-11 mil? That leaves with like 4 mil which isn’t even gonna pay for half of a player as bad as darko

Ali June 25th at 1:11 pm

What don’t you like about villanueva? He’s not Chris Bosh, but he is young, got a big body, tall and has an outside shooting touch. And if you do get Bosh, you need a big body for the inside because he plays the high post. Besides, you can pick up talent from salary dumps (ie Jefferson) and from there use the MLE.

Richard, when you spend this kind of money, you have to look at the impact the player makes on their team, not just their individual numbers. As I said, Boozer did not make any impact on his team, and neither will an unhealthy Chandler.

When I see Gordon, I see another AI. A guy with tremendous individual talents, but doesn’t have a real position (he’s just a scorer, not a PG or SG). They just are not championship team leaders, why did AI never win a ring? If you don’t believe me, then listen a lot of the local sports radio channels.

I recommend spending some time listening to Mike Valenti and Terry Foster, those guys almost always have their facts straight and aren’t afraid to spit out the truth. Also 97.1 gets a lot of insider information from the palace and interviews with Dumars.

Richard June 25th at 1:20 pm

Next year is going to be painful if the best player we get out of free agency is Charlie villanueva!!!!!!!!

John W. Davis June 25th at 2:56 pm

@Ali Damn you love 97.1.

Why dont you call that radio station and tell them how good the Pistonscast Podcast….

Cause we definitely deserve it after all the free promotion you are giving them!
