It’s Time For Rip To Go (To Utah)

I never thought the day would come that I would endorse this trade…

Its such a sad day, but this must be done.

Its time for Richard “Rip” Hamilton to be traded to the Utah Jazz for the often injured Carlos Boozer.

If you listen to Episode 112, I emphatically said Carlos Boozer will never play for the Detroit Pistons.

The reason I said Boozer would not be Piston is I thought we were going to spend 12 to 14 million dollars to acquire him via the 2009 free agency market.

When a re-emerging team like the Pistons have 19 million in cap room and you spend 75% on Boozer that doesn’t equate to a logical acquisition.

But, Boozer opted to stay with Utah Jazz and I was relieved.  I knew we could pursue a great young talent like Charlie Villanueva who I think can be an All-Star by 2011.

As much as signing Charlie V makes sense, Ben Gordon creates a lot of questions marks.

Is he tall enough, is his defense good enough, and will he be happy coming off the bench.

These are all issues that you have to consider because the 6′1 ish Ben Gordon is now the highest paid player on the Detroit Pistons.  (Money=Stardom & Ego)

But as many questions as Gordon creates, he also provides multiple answers.

He can score on anyone in the NBA, he’s a deadly and consistent long range shooter and he’s only 26.

As much as experience counts for in the NBA, its a young man’s league.

Mr. Rip Hamilton is 31 years old and his play will only decline in the future.

I think your highest paid player, (Ben Gordon) should start for the simple economic fact of getting your money’s worth.

If I was the President of a company, I would not have my highest paid employee only work part-time.

That employee would work the long hours needed to get the job done.

Ben Gordon can’t help us win a championship off the bench. I need him to start and play 38 minutes a game, to go hard on defense and average 22 points a game.

I need him to be on the court as much as possible with Rodney Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince to establish the rapport needed to continue the championship culture that Joe Dumars started to create in 2002.

It’s obvious that Richard Hamilton will not be happy off the bench, remember when he said this… “Something’s got to give. I’m all for doing whatever it takes for the team, but coming off the bench with us not winning, something’s got to change”said Hamilton.

Rip’s already called his shot and for the Detroit Pistons to get another step closer to contending for a championship we need all the firepower we can get in our starting 5.

Right now our top five players are, Stuckey, Gordon, Hamilton, Prince, and Villanueva.

Pistons Small Ball

Doesn’t that look eerily similar to small ball?

How quickly do we forget that Pistons fans worldwide could not stand that lineup.

And you know what, the Detroit Pistons players hated that “Small Ball” lineup even more.

With all that said, how often in the NBA are trades for All-Star caliber players fair. (Not Often)

If we can trade Richard Hamilton for Carlos Boozer, WE MUST TAKE THAT DEAL.

Utah’s weakness has always been at shooting guard, and if they really love Paul Milsap then they should be happy to make this switch.

Rip should be happy to go to Utah’s because he can play with what he desperately needs, a point guard.

In my opinion, the young Deron Williams looks like a more polished, pass first version of Chauncey Billups.

If you’re Utah, a your starting five is Deron Williams, Richard Hamilton, Andrei Kirilenko, Paul Milsap and Memo Okur, then you are honestly ready to compete for the NBA championship.

Will you win one, probably not, but with the sometimes volatile Ron Artest and the often injured Andrew Bynum starring on the Los Angeles Lakers, anything can happen.

The new look Pistons would practically be complete, Rodney Stuckey at PG, Ben Gordon at SG, Tayshaun Prince at SF, Charlie Villanueva at PF, and Carlos Boozer at C.

Thats a starting five that would compete well against any team in the NBA.

Don’t forget the Pistons have one of the best, training staffs in the league.  If Boozer comes to town and listens to what they have to say, he should be able to stay on the court for 70+ games and most importantly be ready for the 2010 playoff push.

And remember if this Boozer merger doesn’t work, Carlos will still be a 2010 free agent…

Peace,

John W. Davis

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deven aka (Pimp Scwalla) July 6th at 10:19 pm

I hear you Mike but I think the thing that sealed it was how he reacted to Chauncey Being traded. I thought Rip would be the last person to turn into a crybaby.

We can’t have that!

Astrid July 6th at 10:46 pm

Two things.

Un - Lovely article Mister Davis.

Deux - Rip may have said what he did loosely, but notice he mentions “when we’re not winning”.

I’m still happy for a Rip trade, don’t love it but I’m all for Piston improvement.

Ryan (Young R) July 7th at 1:51 am

As much as I like Rip, I think the only option the Pistons have right now is to trade him for a big.

Nicely written, John!

Ali July 7th at 8:00 am

Two questions.
1. Who plays center? Both Boozer and Villanueva are undersized for the position and don’t play a shred of defense.
2. Why would Utah go for this? They’re projected to be $10 mil above the cap with Milsap on the roster. Why would they want another long term contract when I’m sure someone would gladly take Boozer off their hands in a salary dump.

Ali July 7th at 8:16 am

Breaking News, Pistons decide to make coaching change today. Reports say that if an agreement is not reached between Johnson and Dumars, Keuster is the guy.

I’m not sure what to think of Keuster. Keuster was the brains behind Cleveland last year (Mike Brown’s an idiot) but he’s never been a head coach before. Makes me wonder if he has true leadership about him.

Just think about it. Doug Collins was one of the smartest coaches in the league, but he had meltdown issues that prevented him from being a leader.

John W. Davis July 7th at 8:46 am

@ Ali Utah takes this because an All-Star Shooting Guard makes them a NBA Championship contender.

John W. Davis July 7th at 8:49 am

@ Ali To my knowledge we haven’t even interviewed John Keuster. How can we interview him and hire him in a matter of hours.

Ali July 7th at 9:32 am

I don’t know, but sportscenter just reported it. My guess is from past experience back in the LB days?

As for Utah I’m not sold on that because it still makes their cap situation worse. Unless if their owner’s widow is willing to shell out big money for a number of years, that deal doesn’t happen.

Think about it, Rip will cost them $20 mil a year over the next how ever many years because of the luxury tax. He’s just not worth that much money, Kobe Bryant made $21 mil last year to put it in perspective.

Ali July 7th at 9:40 am

Now if the pistons would take on C.J. Miles’ salary and give a draft pick in return, the deal goes down.

If I’ve calculated it correctly, the Pistons have $4 mil or so in cap space remaining. Miles makes $3.7 mil, and Rip has about the same salary as Boozer.

You lost a first rounder, but Miles is more than likely to outperform whoever Dumars picks.

Ali July 7th at 9:41 am

I should note that $3.7 mil for Miles ends up saving them $7 mil, which is what they intend to give Milsap

Ali July 7th at 12:28 pm

According to various sources, Avery Johnson will not be head coach of the pistons.

Mike Watson July 7th at 1:06 pm

“Yeah buddy rollin like a big shot!” I gotta say John and Deven the music on this show is gettin better everyday! LOL

Anyway, huhhhhh.. My boy Rip City, I would hate to see him go everybody knows thats my fav player on earth but I feel like this…

If he has to go in order to help this team be championship team then I’m down with that. However I dont feel like bringing in Boozer will be the piece that we need to bring a championship to this team. He’s a great player don’t get me wrong but he doesn’t fit the Pistons motto that we know and love. He’s always hurt, he a crybaby, and he shows up when he wants too. That sounds alot to me like Sheed at least the last two do. Plus I dont see how bringing in a player that the same size as Charlie V. is gonna really help us, I mean we still wouldn’t have a pure center. We would have two power forwards fighting for playing time, plays and points. That sounds like a recipe for clashing right there. I dont know you tell me.

But if we are gonna trade the best player on the team, MY FAVORITE player, Rip Hamilton then we can do better than Boozer. I’m an open minded dude tho, so it’s whatever.

Ali July 7th at 1:21 pm

Once again, all indications are pointing to John Keuster because of his expertise and past experience as an assistant coach.

I really wanted Jonhson to develop Stuckey, but Keuster probably knows a lot about point guards right now from working under Larry Brown. For me the only sore thumb is that why has been an assistant coach for 16 years? Wouldn’t it have made a lot of business sense to become a head coach after 10 years if he was well qualified?

Deven aka (Pimpscwalla) July 7th at 1:26 pm

Yeah Mike my remedy for that is a player like Tyson Chandler to go with Boozer. He gives you what Amir Johnson does BUT! He’s not a defensive liability, he is 7′1′, he can move his feet, and with those other pieces around him, he won’t have to worry about scoring.

Throwing Tyson in with that collection of players will be a pain in the azz for teams to deal with. It’s the same formula that makes Bigbabby and Perkins for Boston a pain in the azz–’The more the merrier’

John W. Davis July 7th at 1:27 pm

@ Ali. Right, I have no idea who this John Keuster is. Just because he worked for Larry Brown and Mike Brown doesnt mean he is qualified to be a head coach.

I agree why hasn’t he been a head coach before…

Mike Watson July 7th at 2:09 pm

Yeah Tyson would be a great fit for the team now. He’s a real center and also a pretty decent defender. Perfect!

Stuckey/Ben/Tay/Charlie V/Tyson

“Chancey/Rip/Tay/Sheed/Ben”

Kinda simalar aint it???

Ali July 7th at 2:46 pm

But Mike, Tyson has some serious injury issues. He was outperformed by Joel Przybilla, Samuel Dalembert and Emaka Okafor on the defensive end, who by the account of everyone else (but me) suck. I have no intention of repeating all the statistics, feel free to check out the comment section of the forward thinking article.

John another guy I personally like is Mo Cheecks. His teams generally do very well in the second half of the season and maximize their performance in the post season. Not to mention he was a point guard himself, so he could also teach Stuckey the ways.

Also Sam Mitchell is available. Look at what happened to Toronto after he left. He’s not Pop or the Zen Meister, but he’s a solid coach for a transitioning team.

But whomever we get, I’m through with Joe if Bill Laimbeer does not become an assistant coach.

Do you guys know why Avery Johnson did not sign with Detroit? It’s because Joe gave him a 2 year deal with a team option for a third year, at $4 mil a year with no say in personnel. That’s flat out an insult to guy a who’s a proven head coach. Johnson wanted a 4 year deal; you know why? He WAS AFRAID OF GETTING FIRED AFTER 1 YEAR. Joe has really put himself in a coaching hole.

Deven aka (Pimpscwalla) July 7th at 3:26 pm

Ali & Joel sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-Gee you’re up on his N-N-N’s

Try falling in love with like, a GOOD player and not some piece of trash center that you keep look at his stats and saying…”I think that could work”.

This is what I think of Joel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7RqgOo3hj0

And if that wasn’t enough here’s an even better poking on his dome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqMV3I4Au7E&feature=related

Ali July 7th at 5:30 pm

I’m done talking about centers. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.

Right now the important thing is the head coach. I looked up some more information about Kuester and it turns out he too was a point guard. So perhaps he knows the position well enough to teach Stuckey. He won 2 NCAA championships and went to the final 4 all 4 years. Interestingly enough he only played in the NBA 3 season.

And I think I found out why he was not an NBA head coach before. He had an awful record as a college head coach, going above .500 only once, and having a 1-27 season.

Mike Watson July 7th at 5:35 pm

An if Rip gets traded then what im i gonna do about my twitter account?

http://twitter.com/xRIPCITYx

TADOne July 7th at 5:55 pm

John Kuester?!?! The only faith I have in this is the fact that no one knew who Rick Carlisle was either. Sorry, but Dumars has f*cked up. I apologize to John ahead of time for any profanity-laced tirades I may go on if this happens.

Deven aka (Pimpscwalla) July 7th at 6:48 pm

DEEEEEYAM! 1-27 record? What team? When?

He must have been losing on purpose - point shaving he ERZZZZ off!

Ali you did bring up a good coaching prospect before though. i like Sam Mitchell. He never quite got the credit that he deserved.

Mike Watson July 7th at 7:46 pm

We need to get back on the phone with Avery Johnson! I mean are we looking for a Rick Carlise or a Larry Brown? C’mon now!

Ali July 7th at 8:14 pm

This was like 20 years ago, for George Washington University.

Judging how his numbers around that year were close to .500, I’d say it was more of a fluke, caused by lack of talent.

I’m not exactly sure whether or not to take that into consideration. 16 years is a long time, plenty of time to get experience and learn from guys like Larry Brown (who he’s worked under)

Ken July 7th at 8:36 pm

I just sent a private e-mail to John to express some ideas I have with the coaching situation.

But with the Rip thing, it could work for the salary cap for ‘10. We could see if Boozer will bust his butt for that $$ or just be injury prone as he’s been most of his career. If he doesn’t work out, like AI this past season, we cut bait.

If he works out, then we have an interesting dilemma: do we re-sign him, or check out the tires of the other Free Agents of the class of ‘10?? Decisions, decisions.

As far as the potential head coach, sometimes the 3rd or 4th choice is the best choice. Remember, Chuck Daly was the third choice to take over the Pistons back in 1983, and that worked out pretty well, didn’t it??

John W. Davis July 7th at 9:21 pm

@ Mike Watson. Twitter will let you change your account name lol!

John W. Davis July 7th at 9:24 pm

@ Everyone. Joe Dumars has created this mess.

Its time for Joe Dumars to be the head coach until he can find a great NBA Championship level Coach.

Ali July 7th at 10:23 pm

Ken you can’t seriously be comparing Chuck Daily to John Kuester? Daily had a proven record in the NCAA, Kuester was mediocre at best in the NCAA and has never been a head coach since then.

Ryan (Young R) July 7th at 11:56 pm

You’re reading way too far into that.

Ken’s not saying Kuester is anything like Chuck Daly.

He’s saying that sometimes the third or fourth choice for coach works out for the best.

He’s saying the same thing went on with Chuck Daly (not being the first choice for coach), so maybe we can strike gold again this time.

Ali July 8th at 6:46 am

Ryan I know exactly what he said. The chances of that ever happening again are likely less than 1%.

As I said, Chuck Daily was a proven coach at the NCAA level. Kuester currently has no track records indicating he is a good head coach. Bill Laimbeer has a better chance of becoming Chuck Daily, winning 3 championships in 4 years (especially since he played under him for 10 years)

There’s an assistant coach opponening, I would be shocked if Bill doesn’t get the position. Especially after the Michael Curry fiasco. If he doesn’t, Joe’s gotta be holding something against Bill that we don’t know about.

Ali July 8th at 6:47 am

*opening

One-Take Davis July 8th at 7:44 am

Go to Bed Ali!

Ali July 8th at 12:39 pm

I’m always up early on monday and wednesday, I have college classes

Here’s an interesting read, go to truehoop section of ESPN and look up Ties that Bind.

It’s an article talking about Larry Brown and his influence on the league. Interestingly enough, Kuester also happened to play for both Dean Smith (greatest NCAA coach of all time) and Larry Brown. So there might be a reason why LB loved to have him as an assistant coach.

So even if the guy doesn’t do a great job of handling egos, from what I’ve read so far, he seems to be great with drawing plays. Hopefully we’ll have Laimbeer in charge to be the official ‘ball don’t lie’ guy and fire up the team.

If Laimbeer could get a room full of women focused on a cause not involving chocolate, then I’m sure dealing with Rip would be a like a glass of wine.

Mike Watson July 8th at 4:36 pm

I like Kuester to coach the offense no probs wit that. But imma defensive minded dude. I prefer teams that are aggresive on D. I think you guys dicussed the defesive coaches a couple of episodes ago. We need an assistant coach that’s gonna take over the defense and make us a powerhouse like that dude from Boston.

What do you guys think about the future defense of the team? Sure we can win alotta games with offense (Flip Did that) but Brown won the championship with defense.

Ryan (Young R) July 8th at 5:21 pm

Ken is not saying Kuester is Daly or is going to become Daddy Rich! He’s only saying you sometimes get the better option out of the later coaching choices!

Ken July 8th at 8:57 pm

Thanks, Ryan and Ryan for seeing what I meant on the Daly comparison. I love Ali’s viewpoint though, so I see where you was going with what you said.

We still need a quality big to man the 5, or we won’t even get close to the top 5 in the East.

As it is, we are clearly rebuilding anyway.

Ken July 8th at 8:59 pm

Yikes!! I didn’t see that I meant to compliment Ryan once. My bad.

John W. Davis July 8th at 9:02 pm

Here the profile for the Kid who dunked on Lebron James! http://www.goxavier.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/crawford_jordan00.html

Oh yeah, He’s from Detroit!!!

Ken July 8th at 9:24 pm

McDyess just signed with the Spurs. I wish him the best, because he brought it each night when he was with us, unlike Rasheed, who did take plays off, and games off (and cost McDyess a ring with his infamous leaving Robert Horry open for a series back breaking 3 in OT of Game 5 of the ‘05 Finals.)

Ryan (Young R) July 8th at 9:37 pm

Heh, and the tapes were immediately confiscated. LeBron needs to man up and take it like a man!

Ryan (Young R) July 8th at 9:38 pm

Yeah, I wish McDyess the best. It’s hard to see him go. He plays with such great heart.

Ali July 8th at 10:10 pm

It’s official, Tim Duncan is about to get his 5th ring. Seriously, they’ve got 5 major scorers!

But man did I lose a lot of the (little) respect I had for LeBron today. I’m getting sick and tired of him always getting his way, whether that requires David Stearn cheating for him or Nike taking away free speech

Dre July 9th at 2:06 am

These players leaving and gettin traded left and right is starting to be alittle too much to take. While all teams go through this, it’s just weird that everything just happens over one season. I wish Dice the best. I guess Rasheed too. I really hate Boston even more now. Amir… Grow your hair back, you look like a pitbull. A.I. Should’ve went to Portland.

NBA Kays July 9th at 3:15 am

Long time, no comment.

Wow an offseason, eh?

No more Sheed, Dyess, AI, Amir. Chauncey’s gone. Rip looks like he’s on his way out.

Who are these guys suiting up in Pistons uniforms these days?

All in all, I like the Gordon & CV signings. Both young, very talented offensive minded players. I’m glad Dumars didn’t just throw $15 million at Boozer (had he opted out). Also glad he didn’t go after Artest or Odom. Both those guys are on the wrong side of 30. I’d rather start young.

Obviously the Pistons need some more bigs, specifically someone to play center. Even if the Rip for Boozer trade goes down (which I hope so), he can’t play center either.

Bill Simmons tweeted a few hours ago about a trade that would involve several teams & all in all send out Rip & Tay and bring back Camby & Boozer. I like that move since Camby is a legit center, and since Pistons needs more bigs like Boozer since Rip is now expendable. Plus, both Camby & Boozer are expiring contracts worth about $20 million, which would make the Pistons players in free agency next summer as well.

Ali July 9th at 9:05 am

AI wouldn’t be a good fit in Portland. Roy needs to have the ball in his hands to do his work and he’s by far the better player right now.

Word is the Pistons are targeting Brandon Bass. I’ll leave it at that.

Ali July 9th at 10:47 am

Guys be sure to go to pistons.com at 11:00 AM. They have a live feed of Dumars introducing John Kuester.

Ali July 9th at 11:22 am

John had a great conference. I really liked what I heard, he sounded just like Larry Brown. As I pointed out earlier, you guys should really look at that truehoop article titled “The Ties that Bind Larry Brown to John Kuester and Everything”

Joe, on the other hand, got owned for coach charades.

Astrid July 9th at 11:51 am

Looking forward to seeing what he’s got. :>

If he’s anything like the one and only, coach Brown - I’ll be happy.

Ali July 9th at 2:45 pm

He’s definitely got the same mindset and a lot of knowledge about the game. He talked about playing a grind it out style, and once the defense was set, start implementing a running game. Which, to be honest, makes a lot of sense with the line up we have.

Also for once, Joe said that “Q” will have some serious job security.

Now we wait until the first player-coach feud and see how well Q handles it.

Mike Watson July 9th at 6:03 pm

Ali July 9th at 10:39 pm

here’s a link to the conference

I think this is a guy people would like to play for
