Pargo for Affalo? We think not!

by John W. Davis - posted Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Hey Pistonscast,

I was listening to your show when you were discussing Jannero Pargo.

Pargo was a very bad player this past year. In fact, he is clearly holding the Hornets back. I wrote this back in December:
Reviewing the Southwest Division

Part of the problem is Jannero Pargo. Pargo does only one thing well, hit free throws. Unfortunately, he only gets to the line 2.7 times per 48 minutes, which is below average. Other than the ability to hit a rare free throw, he’s well below average with respect to shooting efficiency (adjusted field goal percentage of 36%). Additionally, he’s also below average with respect to rebounds, turnovers, steals, and personal fouls. To illustrate how poorly he has played, if the Hornets replaced Pargo with a player whose WP48 was 0.000, this team’s projected Wins Produced would rise to 51 and the Hornets might be able to surpass the Mavericks.
And then I said this back in January.

The Best One-Two Punch in the Association

Although the totals are the same, there are some differences. Chris Paul has clearly improved upon what he did last year while Jannero Pargo is quite a bit worse. In fact, Pargo’s play is clearly holding this team back. If Pargo were replaced by an average player, or a player with a 0.100 WP48, the Hornets would be on pace to win 59games. Yes, Pargo stands in the way of this team rising to the top in the West.

And let me add this for Deven… the stats tells us that Dikembe Mutombo has been great the past two seasons.
